India lost an icon

With the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa an era has ended. The iconic Jayalalithaa was buried on Tuesday in a sandalwood casket next to the memorial of her mentor, MG Ramachandran at Chennai's Marina Beach. Last rites were performed by the politician's long-time companion Sasikala Natarajan, who also received the national flag that had draped Ms Jayalalithaa's body. Her rise to political stardom from film world was as enigmatic as her death. She was admitted to hospital in September month with complaint of fever and dehydration. But she never completely recovered from it and finally succumbed to the death.

But she will always be fondly remembered for various reasons. For her supporters, Jayalalithaa will remain as Amma and a source of inspiration for them. Even though critics never lost an opportunity to pin her down, she won hearts of her supporters and emerged as a powerful politicians in a male dominated country like India. Also known as the Iron Lady, she initiated a number of pro-poor schemes in Tamil Nadu which made her the 'God of the people.' This is said to be one of the reasons why people were so attached to Jayalalithaa, whether his party men or the general public. She came up with several schemes in favour of the poor people of Tamil Nadu during her reign. While Amma canteens provide breakfast and dinner at just Rs 5 per plate, Amma salt is a common product at homes in the state. She was 'worshiped' by the supporters. Now the onus will be on second rung AIADMK leader lead by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam to take forward her vision and continue the process of pro-poor initiatives started by late Jayalalithaa.

Still a struggle for girls

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of denizens of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a very sad thing that till today female child is neglected not only in the rural areas but also in the big cities. The girls have been always considered to be lesser of the two human species. More shocking situation is when, in the 21st century we call ourselves civilized, cultured and educated and all but girl child still finds it more and more difficult to subsist on this planet. When you neglect a girl child you are forgetting that you are not only neglecting the individual girl but the very fountain of existence. Even our sacred books point to the fact that a country where women are not respected can never prosper and progress. In the developed countries like America and England a female child is liked as much as a male child.

It is strange how quickly men forgot achievements of women. Everybody knows that Indira Gandhi was one of the best political leaders. There are many female writers like Sarojini Naidu, Bronte sisters, Virginia Wolf and Jane Austen. The women have travelled space and climbed up to Mount Everest. We have many successful females in our own state like Mamang Dai, UPSC officers like Duyu Kampu and Chajat Lowang, Mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa, Journalist Tongam Rina, Miss Earth India 2016 finalist Chum Darang and our Chief Secretary Shakuntala Gamlin and many more.

We belong to the modern generation of humanity. We seek an environment where every human being is considered as free. We seek an environment where every unborn child is welcomed without any gender bias.

Let us live in harmony with nature

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily I would like to put into light the dangers of increasing commercialization of wildlife meat in our state. Our state Arunachal Pradesh is blessed with rich biodiversity which means it is full of different types of plants and animal species. Some of these plants and animal species are found only in our state and not anywhere else in the world. Many more unexplored plant and animal species might still be present in our region completely unknown to the external world waiting to be discovered and listed. Sadly most people are least concern about wildlife.

Human activities like hunting and cutting of forest has led to complete extinction of so many wild plant and animal species around the world and the same might happen in our state too. The wildlife meat is being commercialized and sold at high prices. I know we tribal have taste for hunting and eating wildlife meat but is it right and justified to hunt and shoot down every last wild animal and cut down every last tree to extinction? I belong to Adi tribe and like most tribes we have traditional hunting period but with commercialistion of wildlife meat the wild birds and animals are recklessly hunted round the year with no stoppage. This will lead to total extermination of wildlife in few years if not checked. The forest officials cannot check this alone. Dedicated wildlife officers like Sir Tana Tapi ,Sir Tashi Mize, Sir Neeraj Tamuk etc and many others are doing very appreciable jobs in saving our environment but until and unless we the common people do not realize and accept our mistake of destructing nature and wildlife and take steps to stop it, the last few biodiversity spots of the world will remain in grave danger.

We all can contribute to stop wildlife hunting by not buying wildlife meat. It is my humble request to all Arunachal citizens especially to my own Adi people not to buy wildlife meat. Let us say 'NO' to commercialisation of wildlife meat. If the demand stops the supply will stop too. As for the hunters, there are many other ways of earning income without destroying nature by reckless hunting. We believe Almighty Donyi Polo created all the plants and animal species along with us to live together in balance. And none of us, no matter who or how rich and powerful he or she may be in the society, has the right to exterminate any specie created by the Almighty. Now some might argue extinction is a natural process but it takes tens of thousands years for natural extinction of species but with human activities it has increased upto 100 & 1000 times as per report. So the choice is ours, either we can continue to increase our population and involve in destructing nature leading to our own destruction or we can control our population and live in harmony with each other and with nature and survive.
